Calling All Shipmates!

We are still seeking ways to locate other former submariners in our area who might like to join us. If you know of someone in the Cincinnati area who used to serve in submarines (or still does!) please tell them about this site, or leave us a message (through the "Talk To Us" link on this page to tell us who they are and how to get hold of them.

Base Newsletter - Dave Self has volunteered to do our base newsletter. He has experience in publishing newsletters. Dave is looking for suggestions for a name and also articles that our members would like to contribute. If you have any suggestions or would like to help him please send him an email at bubblehead@dr-self.com  We hope to start out our newsletters on a quarterly basis. We would also like to make our newsletter available for ads, the price is yet to be determined but it will be reasonable (we are just trying to recover the cost of printing and mailing), if you would like to take an ad out please let Dave know.

Base Membership  - We're now up to 80.  We had 2 new members at our last meeting and a secondary member from the Rhode Island base. He is a Cincinnati native and the base commander there. Welcome to all.

NSSDC - Narwhal Project -  I received an email from Tom Schram  of the National Submarine Science Discovery Center (NSSDC) yesterday regarding donations required for the first phase of the Discovery Center. They are working on the Educational Center part of the project and they need the funds in place by April 1. The need is for $500,000.00, they have already secured $300,000.00 but need the additional $200,000.00 by the above date. They are not asking the base for this amount but would like to know if anyone is connected with a business that can make a contribution. If you work for or own a company that deals with these types of contributions please let me know and I will put you in contact with Tom. As you know we are fully behind this project as discussed in our last meeting. The NSSDC is counting on our organization on a local and national level to be a big part of this project. I am going to attach the info NSSDC sent to me yesterday so that you can be up to date on all of the current details of the project. If you need any more information on this project please email me and I will answer your questions or pass them along to NSSDC for a response.

We have not scheduled a meeting place for August or September.  If you have a spot available please contact Dick Young.  We are looking at a future meeting in Milford in the second half of the year and are also in the planning stages of another combined meeting with the Indy and possibly the Louisville base in October as we did last year. The Columbus, Toledo and Cleveland bases are also looking into a state meeting in the future. We also hope to have another Christmas party at Jim and Jack's in December.

October Meeting - We are in the planning stages of another joint meeting with the INDY base, more details to follow. Maybe they will challenge us to horseshoes again. (I had to put the horseshoes in there since I copied the INDY Commander on this email).

Base Elections - Since we are approaching our 2 year base anniversary at the end of the year we are due to have elections by then according to our by laws. The date for the elections has not been set yet but we are looking for people to step forward and run for our executive positions. Please think about running for an elected office. We should start the nomination process by September at the latest. This will be a discussion at a future meeting.

Additional Information: We are now processing 2004 dues. For yearly members the fee is $20.00, for national life members the fee is for base dues only $10.00. The dues are payable at our next meeting or they can be mailed to our Treasurer at:

Dick Hauck  - 8945 Long Lane - Cincinnati, Ohio  45231

Checks payable to Cincinnati Base USSVI. One additional note on dues, if the dues are not paid by the end of March you will be required to pay an additional $10.00 fee as if you are a new USSVI member, all members not paying their dues by the end of March are put in inactive status at the National Headquarters. The big benefit of National dues are the mailings of the publication American Submariner, this magazine is published quarterly, if you are not receiving this magazine please contact the Base Commander.

For those of you on our email list who are not members, feel free to stop at our meetings, if you are a submariner or a friend of a submariner you are a welcomed guest.
